FUN FOOD FACTS

Here are some fun food facts that I came across in my internet travels:

- There are about 100, 000 bacteria in one litre of drinking water. Moreover, a glass of tap water has technically been drunk 7 times over before it reached your mouth (gross).

- Some frozen fruits and vegetables have more nutrients than fresh. Why? Because a lot are frozen right away for shipment, whereas many fresh fruits and vegetables must travel great distances prior to reaching the grocery store shelves (so lose more nutrients on the way).

- Temperature can affect appetite, which is why more people gain weight in the winter. In the summer, people tend to drink more water because of the heat, which also helps with weight loss.

- Apples, potatoes, and onions all taste the same when eaten with your nose plugged. Because plugging your nose infringes on taste, similarities are based texture and consistency, of which these three food items are similar.

- The smaller the size of the berry, the sweeter it will taste. A good thing to know on your next berry picking trip :)

- There are 1200 varieties of  watermelon.

- To prevent bananas from going brown, put them in the refrigerator (I don't know why I haven't done this before).

- Diet soda has not been proven to aid in weight loss. In fact, it’s been shown to actually increase hunger.

- Watermelon and cucumbers are among a dog’s favorite foods…once they are introduced to them, of course. And these foods supply valuable enzymes to a dog’s system.

- Large doses of coffee can be lethal. Ten grams, or 100 cups over 4 hours, can kill the average human.

 - Tequila is made from the root of the blue agave cactus.

- Lemons have a higher sugar content than strawberries.
- The smaller the pepper, the hotter it is.

- The FDA allows an average of 30 or more insect fragments and one or more rodent hairs per 100 grams of peanut butter (barf).

- The vintage date on a bottle of wine indicates the year the grapes were picked, not the year of bottling.

 - The world's costliest coffee, at $130 a pound , is called Kopi Luwak. It is in the droppings of a type of marsupial that eats only the very best coffee beans. Plantation workers track them and scoop their precious poop.

- To reap the therapeutic benefits of green tea, you have to drink 4-5 cups everyday.

- The number 1 cause of flatulence is milk and milk products.  Bacteria in your intestines intermixed with milk products is a lethal combination for gas! So girls and boys, don't drink milk before a date.

- Peanuts are used to manufacture dynamite.
- It takes food seven seconds to get from your mouth to your stomach.

- To burn off the calories from 1 M&M, you would need to walk an entire football field.

- There are more than 1,000 chemicals in a cup of coffee. Of these, only 26 have been tested, and half caused cancer in rats (oh my!)

- There are more nutrients in the cornflake package itself than there are in the actual cornflakes.

- The powder on chewing gum is finely-ground marble.

- The liquid inside young coconuts can be used as a substitute for blood plasma.

- The average chocolate bar has 8 insects' legs in it.

- Strawberries have more vitamin c than oranges (maybe I will drink strawberry juice next time I am sick instead of orange juice).

- Rubber is one of the ingredients in bubble gum.

- Pumpkin rule of thumb: the darker the shell, the longer the pumpkin lasts (Halloween, here I come!).

- Pearls melt in vinegar.

- Onions have no flavor, only a smell.

- Nutmeg is extremely poisonous if injected intravenously.

- If you shake a can of mixed nuts, the larger ones will rise to the top.

Coffee drinkers have sex more frequently than non-coffee drinkers.

- Coconuts kill more people in the world than sharks do. Approximately 150 people are killed each year by coconuts.

Chewing on gum while cutting onions can help a person from producing tears.
