Brown Sugar, Vanilla Body Scrub

This couldn't be easier to make, and it lasts forever. The trick is to use a really good base oil (such as jojoba, or olive oil). Exfoliating is an important part of any skin routine, as you are helping shed the outermost, dead layer of skin. Brown sugar is an excellent exfoliant, and also does not contain any preservatives that could irritate the skin. Many spas use it in this same manner, because it contains levels of antioxidant properties due to the molasses (which contain vitamin B's). The addition of apple cider vinegar helps with the PH level of your skin, while the pure vanilla extract leaves your skin with a sweet smell. You can also tweak it with your favorite essential oils.

Ingredients (makes about 1/2 cup):
2/3 cup brown sugar (preferably organic, and dark)
3/4 cup base oil (jojoba or olive oil work well)
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 tbsp unrefined, organic apple cider vinegar (optional; balances skin)
5 drops of essential oil (optional)

1) Blend all of the ingredients with a spatula, in a large bowl. Transfer to a seal able container. To use, take a small amount with your fingertips, and rub gently all over the body and face, rinse. I like to use this 2-3 days/ week, but you can use it as much as you feel the need. The brown sugar will settle slightly, so you may need to give it a stir every once in a while. Enjoy!

How long does this keep for? I know oil eventually goes rancid, I assume it helps to store this in a cool location? Great idea!

  2. To be honest, in my experience using oil in beauty products, it lasts indefinitely. Oil going rancid for food would be more of a problem taste wise, but I have never really thought about it on the skin? Also, I always use this up before it would matter. The above batch lasts me about 2 months. I don't keep it in the fridge, but I guess you could. It might be nice and cooling on the skin if you did that.
